Abstract: This presentation will provide a quick look at the science behind the blue turf at BSU. From the stands, the turf may appear visually like textured, colored plastic, but it’s actually constructed from multiple layers of polymeric materials, each of which provide an important function that supports the longevity of the field and the safety of players. We will dissect each component of the turf, discuss how it’s made, and explain why each layer has the properties that it does. Everyone is welcome to attend, we extend a special invitation to parents and students who are on campus for homecoming weekend, as well as to students enrolled in MSE 101. Presenter Bio: Scott T. Phillips is a Professor at Boise State University in the Micron School of Materials Science & Engineering. His research interests include (i) re-inventing plastics so that they are easy to recycle, (ii) developing non-polymer-based alternative materials to plastics, and (iii) developing methods and procedures for converting hard-to-recycle existing plastic waste streams into useful, new materials.
